Chair recruitment

Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) and this exceptional opportunity to lead our board as our new Chair.  I hope you will enjoy finding out more about us, our journey and our ambitions through this microsite.

NUH is a large and complex organisation with an annual budget of £1.7 billion, a key member of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System and the largest employer in the region.  We are proud of Team NUH, a workforce of around 19,000 colleagues and of the services we provide to over a million people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, as well as a wider population across the East Midlands – we need to ensure the quality and safety of these services is consistent for all.

We are a Trust with a high profile, and our reputation locally, regionally and nationally is critical to building, and rebuilding, trust and confidence with our staff, volunteers, populations and partners.  Our ‘People First’ strategy has been developed with our stakeholders; focused on our absolute commitment to providing outstanding health outcomes and patient and staff experience.

Following Nick Carver’s appointment as NHSE Regional Chair for the East of England, we are seeking a new Chair who will lead our committed, supportive, open and transparent Unitary Board.  The Board has overseen our significant and continued improvement journey over the last four years, and our new Chair will join us at a critical time as the Independent Maternity Review is scheduled to report in June 2026.

This is a high profile and influential position, and we are seeking an experienced, compassionate and resilient board leader with Chair or equivalent experience gained at scale. You will need to quickly build credibility with a wide range of stakeholders and bring a deep understanding of healthcare services and system reforms.  This is a unique and critical role for our Trust and our communities with the opportunity to shape our services and the future wellbeing and prosperity of our workforce and the populations they serve.

I hope you will be interested to find out more and would encourage you to speak to our recruitment partners at GatenbySanderson for a confidential conversation; Helen Barkham or Emma Pickup via Helen.Barkham@gatenbysanderson,com

I look forward to meeting you.

Best wishes,

Anthony May
